Orange Coast College’s pop vocal class performed a mix of jazz, pop, classic rock and R&B Tuesday evening at the OCC Music Recital Hall.
Well known songs were sung by students such as, “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, “The Reason” by Hoobastank and NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye”.
One of the many performers was OCC Musical Theatre major, Anabel Robles. She decided to sing “Smile” by Lily Allen.
“My favorite singer, Lydia Knight, I saw her perform it [“Smile” by Lily Allen] one time at a concert two years ago,” Robles said. “I just thought it was a really fun song. She was the main reason why I performed it.”
The crowd was applauding and cheering throughout the night.
OCC music student Diana Vu attended the concert and said she enjoyed it.
“I always love coming to the pop vocal concerts and the students are always really great,” Vu said. “I love the little ensembles of the live musicians, it makes it like, just one step above. I always try to recommend other people to come to it as well.”
The director of this concert is Pop Vocal Technique instructor, Anne Walsh. She has been a part of OCC’s music faculty since 2017.
“I’m just very happy with tonight and I have all levels in this class and to see students blossom, there’s nothing like it,” Walsh said. “It’s just great to see them up there being joyful and realizing they can do it.”
