Athens to Celebrate MLK Day with parade and music festival

On Monday, Jan. 20, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement and United Group of Artists Music Association will host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade and Music Festival in downtown Athens at 2 p.m. The parade will begin at 3 p.m. on the corner of Hull Street and Hancock Avenue in downtown Athens, and is free to attend.

According to the parade’s website, the event will feature bands, dance groups and community organizations, followed by a music festival showcasing diverse talents, vendors and family-friendly activities. A screening of AADM’s documentary, “Changing the Narrative: Stories of Black and Minority Entrepreneurs,” will also be shown at Flicker Theatre & Bar.

This year’s theme, “The Time is Always Right to Do What is Right,” is a quote from King, and will aim to unite the community and celebrate King’s legacy.

According to their website, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement works to advance King’s vision of equality, advocating for social justice and opportunity for all. The United Group of Artists Music Association specializes in live urban entertainment and concerts, using music and the arts to foster awareness and inspire change in communities.

Vendors are able to attend and showcase food, goods and services during the event. The AADM and UGAMA also encourage schools, churches, nonprofits and more community groups to join the celebration to honor and celebrate the legacy of King.
