Athens weekend preview: Holiday markets, Lamar Dodd capstone exhibition and more


The Red & Black compiles a weekly roundup of shows and events for the upcoming weekend. This weekend includes The Stews at the Georgia Theatre, an evening with Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight, ‘9 to 5: The Musical’ and more.

Thursday, Nov. 21

ATHENS ACADEMY HOLIDAY MARKET

WHAT: Athens Academy’s 10th annual Holiday Market will feature over 85 vendors from across the Southeast. Items sold by vendors will include hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, artwork, floral arrangements, soaps, artisanal food items and more. Parking is free.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ELECTION RECAP PANEL

WHAT: Political reporters from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution will join leading scholars to unpack the 2024 election outcomes and analyze potential implications for Georgia and the nation. Panelists will include Patricia Murphy of the AJC, Trey Hood and James C. Cobb from the University of Georgia and Seth C. McKee from Oklahoma State University. A light reception will follow the event in the Ted Turner Exhibition.

GLADYS KNIGHT

WHAT: Spend an evening in Athens with seven-time Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight, a singer who has recorded over 38 albums and enjoyed #1 hits in pop, gospel, R&B and more. Clear bags are required for the event.

Friday, Nov. 22

NOTHING GOLD

WHAT: The opening reception for “NOTHING GOLD,” the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art’s Bachelor of Fine Arts fall 2024 capstone exhibition, will be held Friday evening. The show is organized by and showcases the work of 17 graduating BFA students and includes ceramics, painting, metalwork, photography and more. The show will be on view through Dec. 5.

THE STEWS

WHAT: The Stews return to the Georgia Theatre on Friday with their blend of indie rock, soulful melodies and eclectic style. Composed of seasoned musicians with diverse musical backgrounds, The Stews frequent the Classic City for performances at various venues. Attendees must be ages 18 and up.

WHEN: Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

OCAF HOLIDAY MARKET

WHAT: The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation will hold their annual holiday market featuring artists and craftspeople from across the region. Works will include pottery, paintings, jewelry, sculpture, photography and more. The market runs the whole weekend, and ticket sales are non-refundable.

Saturday, Nov. 23

NOCHE DE BAILE

WHAT: Dance your way through the night with this monthly fiesta where SALSAthens and TIMBAthens collaborate to help you learn the hottest Latin dance moves and let loose on the floor. DJ Mane will spin the latest Latin rhythms to complement the event.

WHERE: Athentic Brewing Company

WHEN: Doors open at 8 p.m., dance class is at 8:30 p.m. and dancing goes until 11:30 p.m.

LAND ART

WHAT: Join a naturalist to hike and create natural art in the forest of Sandy Creek Nature Center. The class is geared toward children ages 6 to 10.

ATHENS FARMERS MARKET

WHAT: With over 40 vendors each week, Athens Farmers Market features a wide selection of locally grown produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, prepared foods, art, flowers, and coffee. Live music will also be played while you shop, and a Children’s Booth will offer an activity for the little ones.

Sunday, Nov. 24

BANQUET OF BLESSINGS

WHAT: The Pollack Family Foundation is partnering with The Classic Center to host Banquet of Blessings, a community Thanksgiving feast featuring giveaways of clothing, sleeping bags, children’s books, toys and more. Partnering with the foundation and donating helps to cover varying costs of attendance for community members: $25 covers the cost to feed one person, $50 covers all costs for one person to attend and be fed, and $100 covers all costs and provides gifts for one person. Check donations can be made out to The Pollack Foundation and mailed to P.O. Box 1047, Statham, Georgia 30666.

JAZZ SUNDAYS

WHAT: Enjoy live jazz every Sunday in Creature Comforts’ taproom. The taproom is open from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL

WHAT: Driven by music and lyrics from Dolly Parton, this musical presented by UGA Theatre tells the story of three female coworkers’ plan to get even with their lying, no-good boss. The trio aim to give their workplace a much-needed makeover, taking control of the company that has always kept them down. Performances will also be given Thursday, Nov. 21 and Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m., and these shows will feature American Sign Language interpretation for deaf and hard of hearing audience members.
