PRESTON, Minn. (KTTC) –
“It’s just something that you do on Sunday nights,” started Jayce Kiehne.
Fillmore Central senior, Jayce Kiehne, has never missed an open gym. That dedication to the game has led to Falcons’ history.
“Third grade. I have a son in the same grade so I’ve watched him since then, and it was pretty obvious,” laughed Fillmore Central boys basketball head coach, Brady O’Connor.
Whether he’s making a highlight play or efficient scoring, Kiehne’s a crucial part of Falcons basketball.
“He’s an elite scorer. He’s scored twenty points a game for three years. That’s made my life pretty easy,” stated O’Connor.
“As a sophomore, I knew I had it in me,” claimed Kiehne. “With the coach and teammates around me, I knew they’d put me in a position to have a chance at it.”
“It” refers to the all-time scoring record. Friday, Kiehne surpassed Jordan Jarland’s record with 1,259 points and counting.
“I feel like all that basketball I’ve been playing has just built confidence in me and I’ve known what I’ve been capable of doing,” said Kiehne.
It’s not too often an athlete of that caliber comes through a small town like Fillmore Central.
“Well, there haven’t been very many obviously in school history,” added O’Connor. “He’s the leading scorer, he’s going to be top ten in every other category… We’ll see, you know, where he ends up, but that kind of shows you he’s one-of-a-kind.”
Kiehne and Fillmore Central have just under a month remaining in the basketball regular season. The three-sport star cherishes his time as a Falcon.
“It’s been amazing. I love playing sports with all my teammates,” ended KiehneThe teams we’ve had have been like one-of-a-kind — coming here and making a mark for the school.”
