BIRMINGHAM – A cold shooting night hindered the UAB women’s basketball team as the Blazers suffered a 72-62 loss to Auburn on Sunday at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (6-2) shot just 29.5% from the floor (18-of-61) and was 7-of-24 from behind the arc. Auburn (6-2) shot 47% for the game and outscored the Blazers 23-8 in the second quarter which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
Freshman Jade Weathersby tied her career high with 17 points to lead three Blazers in double figures. Demin DeShields added 16 and Tracey Breshers had 13. Weathersby has now scored double figures in each of her last four games.
Honesty Scott Grayson, the sister of former men’s basketball Blazer Tyreek Scott Grayson, had a game-high 22 points to lead the Tigers.
Auburn scored the first six points of the game which forced UAB to take an early timeout. Out of that timeout, the Blazers scored seven of the next nine points to get back into the game.
Following Ashton Elley taking a charge on the defensive end, Weathersby gave UAB its first lead of the game at 11-10 and the Blazers led 13-12 after one.
Once again, Auburn scored the first six points of the second quarter to regain an 18-13 lead, and following a layup from Mar’shaun Bostic, UAB took another time out with the Tigers on a 10-0 run and up 20-13.
Auburn ultimately outscored the Blazers 23-8 in the second quarter and took a 35-21 lead into the halftime break.
The two teams each had 16 points in the third quarter and entered the fourth with Auburn ahead 51-37.
The Blazers had one final run in them and got as close as seven points after a Elley 3-pointer with :26 left, but the lead was too large for UAB to overcome. The loss was UAB’s first inside Bartow Arena this season.
UAB is back in action this coming Saturday, Dec. 9 on the road at Nicholls State.
