Augusta car crash injures several Gardiner students, 1 seriously

AUGUSTA — Several students from Gardiner Area High School were injured Wednesday in a car crash in Augusta that remains under investigation.

During the day, Lauren Arnold, principal at Gardiner Area High School, sent out this text: “I am reaching out to inform you that there was an accident on Cony Road in Augusta today that involved four of Gardiner Area High School students that attend CATC. The families of all of the students have been notified. At the present time, all are expected to recover.”

Staff Sgt. Eric Lloyd at the Augusta Police Department said a single vehicle struck a pole on Cony Road. The four occupants were all juveniles, with one sustaining injury, one reporting a minor injury and two with no injury or minor complaints of pain.

The kids were on their way to Capital Area Technical Center when the crash happened around noon, Superintendent Pat Hopkins said. They were in a private vehicle, not transportation provided by the school.

Augusta fire officials posted a notice on social media to say that Cony Road from Eastern Avenue to Chelsea town line would be closed for an accident reconstruction, and updated the notice later to indicate the road was open.

CATC is a Maine Career and Technical Education School that offers a variety of programs for high school students to gain hands-on experience across a range of areas, including automotive technology, culinary arts, emergency medical technician services, and plumbing and heating.
