Australian Open’s efforts to court China’s tennis fans pay off

MELBOURNE — When China’s Zheng Qinwen won her semifinal match at the Australian Open, her fellow countrymen Victor and his wife didn’t hesitate: They booked a flight from Guangdong, in southeast China, to Melbourne to cheer her on in the final.

“We didn’t expect her to come this far to the finals, so of course we need to come watch and support,” Victor said, waving the Chinese flag they brought with them from their home to the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday.
