IRVINE, Calif. – The San Diego State men’s tennis team took the road for the first time this season, taking on UC Irvine on Saturday. The Aztecs won the doubles point but were swept in singles in a 4-1 defeat.
The Scarlet and Black fall to 2-1 while the Anteaters improve to 3-1.
“We won the doubles point but only found a way to win one first set in singles, that’s not going to get the job done,” Head Coach Gene Carswell said following the match. “I’m disappointed that we didn’t find solutions as the opportunities were there.”
In doubles, Estonian duo Alexander Mandma and Robin Parts played on the top court against Brandon Park and Noah Zamora. The Aztecs won 6-4. On the third court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Bora Sengul edged Matthew Sah and Enrique Luque Rico 7-5 to take the doubles point. On court No. 2, Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman fell to Andy Nguyen and Hiroki Sakagawa 6-4.
In singles, Sengul played on the third court against Zamora. He won his first set 6-2 but dropped the second by the same score. Sengul led 2-1 in the deciding set when the match was decided.
At the top of the lineup, Seeman faced Luque Rico but was bested in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
Playing on court No. 2, Sato played Sakagawa. He fell 6-2, 6-2.
On the fourth court, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice went up against Rithvik Krishna. The first set was close, but Krishna ended up on top 6-4. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice ran out of steam in the second set as he was defeated 6-0.
In his match, Mandma was dropped 6-3, 6-4 by Lawee Sherif on the sixth court.
Also going unfinished, Parts trailed Nguyen on court No. 5, 6-4, 5-6.
