Bars, bagels and sushi: 9 tasty pieces of Reno food news you may have missed

Here’s a roundup of the latest food happenings in Reno:

These new eateries have recently opened in Reno

Underworld Distillery

5301 Longley Lane

Underworld Distillery, 5301 Longley Lane, is a combined distillery and cocktail lounge that opened late last year to showcase the skills of founder Robbie Anderson, a former journeyman electrician and tradesman whose path to distilling emerged from his earlier work in building stills for making essential oils.

Underworld is part retail store and part cocktail lounge with dedicated hours for each business.

Monday and Tuesday are dedicated to retail sales. During the rest of the week (excluding Sunday, when the business is closed), visitors can also enjoy Underworld’s cocktail lounge from 3:30 to 10 p.m.

Underworld’s distillations run the gamut of the liquor world with rum, whiskey, gin and vodka. The distillery’s products include Crossroads Rum, which is aged in whiskey barrels, and the limited edition Grim Chocolatier that leans on the sweet notes of its grain blend. The spiced rum is quite cinnamony and tingles the lips, while Underworld’s gin, one of the standouts, has bright floral notes that jump out of the glass.

Einstein Bros. Bagels

 5050 Kietzke Lane

Einstein Bros. Bagels on Kietzke Lane reopened in early February after closing for repairs in early 2023 after a snowstorm damaged the building’s roof.

The space, which once housed Krispy Kreme, became Einstein’s first location in Reno in 2010.

Under new ownership, Biggest Little Sushi Bar in downtown Reno rebranded late last year as Itzavy Sushi. The extensive menu includes cooked and raw rolls, nigiri, appetizers and entrees.

Dopo Pizza & Pasta

Reno Public Market, 299 E. Plumb Lane

Since opening last year, Reno Public Market has become home to the second locations of several local eateries, including Dopo Pizza & Pasta, which is based in Midtown Reno.

Dopo, which means “after” in Italian, uses locally sourced ingredients for its menu items, which include gluten-free pizza and fresh housemade pastas, seasonal appetizers and desserts. Dopo’s new location will include a Mugnaini wood-fired oven as well as several new items on the menu.

Lox, Stock & Two Smoking Bagels

Early February saw the entrance of this gritty new bagel spot to downtown Reno.

Lox, Stock & Two Smoking Bagels features a rotating menu including serano-cheddar bagels, build-your-own bagel sandwiches, and nacho cheese-infused bagel creations that owner Jason Branyan has dubbed the “Nacho Libre.” In addition to bottled and canned beer, the bagel spot offers eight beers on tap.

Branyan shuttered his bagel spot roughly a week after opening, but he tells the RGJ it was only a temporary move to rectify a few issues and he’s back open for business.
