Bangladesh Agricultural University’s soil science department professor MMR Jahangir and his team of researchers have developed crops nutrient demand measurement method and android mobile app recently.

The soil science department organised a seminar titled ‘Development of a Field-scaled Nutrient Balance Calculator for Crops of an Intensively Managed Agricultural System’ on Sunday in the agriculture faculty’s conference room, said a press release.

Prof Jahangir said that they developed the app after researching three years, which was funded by Bangladesh Science Academy and United States Department of Agriculture Endowment Programme Project.

BAU agriculture faculty dean prof Md Golam Rabbani attended as chief guest while soil science department head prof Shafiqul Islam presided over the seminar.

Director of Bangladesh agricultural university research system prof Mahfuza Begum, coordinator of higher education and research committee prof Md Abu Hadi Noor Ali Khan, former dean of BAU agriculture faculty prof M Zahiruddin were present as special guests.

‘We have developed a mobile app for measuring the nutrient requirements of crops. When soil, climate, and rainfall of an area are added to the app, it will tell how much fertiliser is required for any crop in that area,’ said chief researcher prof Jahangir.

He also said that scientists were using the app then. But the app would be made user-friendly for farmers at the field level in the next year.
