Bay Village High School Senior Shines in The Addams Family at Magnificat High School in Rocky River

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The preview of The Addams Family play on Nov. 16 at Magnificat Girls High School in Rocky River set the stage for a stellar performance. Among the talented cast, 17-year-old Sam Brown, a senior from Bay Village High School, stood out in his portrayal of Lucas Beineke, the elder son in this hauntingly delightful production.

Sam was one of eight male actors in the 34-person production from area schools including: Azin Abbas from St. Ignatius, JR Kenney from Bay, Max Lucic from Rocky River, Isaiah Clark from NE Ohio College Prep, Charlie Pinter from Midview High School, Jack Kanaris from Berea-Midpark and Colin Willett from Elyria Catholic.

Sam’s journey through theater began a decade ago, with early experiences at The Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, where his passion for performing took root. His father, Mike Brown, said he’s graced various stages, from Normandy Elementary School to Bay Middle School, where he previously embodied the younger Pugsley in The Addams Family during seventh grade.

“His dedication to the craft,” said Mike, “led him to Magnificat, where he’s portrayed four distinct roles, filling in occasionally when the school required male actors.”

Driven by his love for the stage and encouraged by both his parents, Mike and Leslie Brown, Sam has consistently pursued acting opportunities. His father highlighted the impact of Sam’s formative experience at Beck Center, underscoring the family’s support for his passion. As he nears graduation in 2024, Mike said, “Sam’s sights are set on pursuing musical theater at the college level, planning auditions alongside his academic applications.”

The Addams Family showcases the talent of Magnificat’s students, supported by an adult orchestra, adding depth and melody to the performance. Mike Brown praised the school’s commitment to professionalism, noting the consistent challenge and growth offered to budding actors like Sam.

Not only has Sam found his niche in theater, but he also comes from a lineage steeped in music education. “His grandfather and great-grandmother, both music teachers,” said Mike, “are regular attendees at his shows.” They are clearly joining his mother and father in their unwavering support.

As Sam Brown continues to enchant audiences with his talent, his theatrical journey stands as a testament to dedication, family support, and an unwavering passion for the performing arts.

This production was a captivating rendition of The Addams Family that included huge projected scenery at the back of the stage and more than 20 sterling musical numbers. But the outstanding characteristic was the surprise of so many student singers with such incredibly powerful voices.

Crews that also need to be applauded include: costume and prop, hair and make-up, set-building, run crew and pit orchestra.

Handling them with great skill was Jill Haller who is the Director of Performing Arts at the school. She noted, “The Addams Family is a beloved and iconic collection of characters, legendary enough to span the test of time in the hearts of the old and young. At its core, it is a celebration of the unconventional and a tribute to the beauty of being true to oneself.”

For those eager to witness this captivating rendition of The Addams Family, performances run from Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 24-26 at Magnificat High School, located at 20770 Hilliard Boulevard in Rocky River. Ticket information is available through the website of the school: www.magnificaths.org.
