FOR National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer Jerry Diaz, the holiday season is that time of year when he and his clients can create a realistic approach to help them maintain their fitness routine while still enjoying savory meals.
Stick to your routine
It’s going to be a busy season highlighted by parties and gatherings so it is important to plan at least a 10- to 15-minute walk before a meal or after a meal, Diaz said.
In addition, performing at least half of your normal exercise routine can help maintain your current fitness level, he added.
Don’t overeat
Yes, you can indulge in your favorite holiday meals. However, it is important to avoid overeating, Diaz said.
If you’re attending a family gathering, plan to limit your calorie intake prior to the event, he added.
Fasting is another option. Drinking and staying hydrated can assist with suppressing false hunger. Staying active throughout the day can also prevent unnecessary snacking and overeating, Diaz said.
Plan ahead
The most important tip is to plan ahead, he added. You can also inform your friends and family that you’re on a fitness journey and will not to be pressured to overindulge with meals or skip a mini-workout.
Creating a realistic schedule that includes short workouts and planned meals can help maintain your weight during the “toughest” season of the year, Diaz said.
Enjoy life
For Diaz, the most important tip is to enjoy the holiday season. Physical fitness is only one piece of a healthy lifestyle, he added. There is also a need to improve your spiritual state, which can result in positive emotions and open opportunities to reenergize your fitness journey.
