Bennington-based Hemmings Motor News is poised to mark its 70th year

BENNINGTON — As Hemmings gears up to celebrate its 70th year through 2024, the antique and specialty auto publication is rolling out a new logo, along with some new products and services.

“Hemmings is the original collector car marketplace, and we have grown and evolved our business over time to provide products and services that meet the needs of enthusiasts who enjoy buying and selling collector vehicles,” Jonathan Shaw, president of Hemmings, said in a media release.

Shaw said the changes are being unveiled this week during the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) auto trade show in Las Vegas.

He added that the anniversary celebration “will continue throughout 2024 with the launch of many new product offerings across our marketplace, services, media and events businesses. At Hemmings, we remain resolutely focused on uplifting and growing the collector car community.”

HEMMINGS HISTORY

The publication was launched in the Midwest in January 1954 by Ernest Hemmings, with four pages and a circulation of about 550, according to information on the Hemmings website.

What was then called Hemmings Motor News and later was referred to as “the bible of the collector car hobby.”

Hemmings was purchased during the 1960s and soon moved to Bennington by investors that included the late longtime publisher, Mandred “Terry” Ehrich. He died in 2022 after having led Hemmings for 33 years.

At that time, the Hemmings magazine circulation was well over 200,000, where it remains today. The company also has expanded with specialty auto magazines and created and expanded its online presence.

The company lists about 100 employees at the Bennington offices on West Main Street.
