BOYS’ TENNIS NOTEBOOK: Lammert named 1st-team All-State

For the third year in a row, Floyd Central’s Ben Lammert has received All-State recognition from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association.

As a sophomore he garnered honorable mention in singles from the IHSTeCA. Last year, he was selected to the second team. This year, he was one of 15 recently chosen to the IHSTeCA’s first team.

Floyd Central senior Ben Lammert has received first-team All-State honors from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association. He went 24-4 while leading the Highlanders to sectional, regional and semistate titles this past season.




Playing No. 1 singles, Lammert went 24-4 while leading the Highlanders to sectional, regional and semistate titles this past season.

He was one of 14 players from Clark and Floyd counties to garner recognition from the IHSTeCA.

Lammert’s teammate, Riley Doddridge, was a second-team selection. The junior went 27-1 while playing No. 2 singles for Floyd.

Four other local players garnered honorable mention in singles. They were Borden junior Judd Missi, Floyd Central junior Preston Bickel, Jeffersonville senior Eli Cochrum and Silver Creek junior Camden Smith. Bickel, Cochrum and Smith helped their teams to sectional titles.

Additionally, four area doubles teams also received All-State honorable mention.

They were Floyd Central juniors Joseph Howell and Alex Eichenberger; the Jeffersonville tandem of junior Ryan Crawford and sophomore Javier Gomez; the Providence brotherly duo of junior Foster Nash and freshman Cooper Nash; and Silver Creek seniors Chase Richardson and Sam McAfee.

Jeffersonville’s No. 1 doubles duo of Ryan Crawford, left, and Javier Gomez, right, were the runners-up in the recent Bedford North Lawrence Regional. The two defeated Terre Haute South seniors Raghav Bakshi and Connor Hatch 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. In the final, Evansville North’s senior Nathan Mitchell and Jacob Hafele outlasted Crawford and Gomez 6-4, 6-4.




Crawford and Gomez were the sectional champions in the individual state tourney. They went on to finish as the runners-up in the Bedford North Lawrence Regional. Evansville North seniors Nathan Mitchell and Jacob Hafele outlasted Crawford and Gomez 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match at BNL.

Lammert, Doddridge, Missi, Bickel, Cochrum and Smith also were selected to the All-District 8 squad in singles, as were the four aforementioned doubles teams.

Floyd Central’s Mark Haviland, who guided the Highlanders to the state quarterfinals for the second straight season, was chosen as the District 8 Coach of the Year.

Additionally, Floyd Central, Providence and Silver Creek garnered Team Academic All-State honors from the IHSTeCA.

BRAVES SWEEP SAC HONORS

Borden swept the All-Southern Athletic Conference honors.

The Braves took the titles at No. 1 singles (Missi), No. 2 singles (Kasym Nash) and No. 3 singles (Brady Peine).

They also claimed first in No. 1 doubles (Zander Keith and Will Banet) and No. 2 doubles (Kylan Nash and John Hutt).

Borden’s Judd Missi received All-State honorable mention recognition from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association. He also was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Southern Athletic Conference.




Missi was selected as the SAC’s Most Outstanding Player.

Meanwhile Borden’s Sam Beckort, who guided the Braves to their sixth straight SAC title and an undefeated regular season, was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Final standings: Borden 4-0, Lanesville 3-1, South Central 2-2, Henryville 1-3, New Washington 0-4.
