BREWSTER – It was a night like no other for Brewster High School when young actors and actresses took top honors at the Metro Awards—secondary schools answer to Broadway’s Tony’s—at Purchase College in Westchester.
The Metro Awards shine a spotlight on the exceptional musical theater productions, talented actors and actresses and devoted creative teams who take to the big stage each spring in high schools throughout Putnam, Rockland and Westchester along with Bergen County, New Jersey.
Of the 71 schools competing, Brewster High students won the top award for “Best Production” for their performance “Once on this Island,” while senior Ariana Arocho brought home the gold for “Outstanding Performance by a leading actress” and Ava Fernandez, a student at the C.V. Starr Intermediate School, won “Outstanding Performance by a Child Performer.”
Superintendent of Schools Michelle Gosh said the entire district was “so proud of our students,” while Performing Arts Director Andrea Perdicho described the night as “magical. It was chaos after we won. The cast and crew were ecstatic.”
Patricia Taylor, Performing Arts curriculum coordinator, described the evening as “incredible. We are beyond proud of our thespians.”
Two other Putnam schools also achieved fame and fortune when Hayley Craane, a student at Putnam Valley High School won the Best Female Acting Performance for her role in “Legally Blonde,” and Jake Filangeri, a student at Carmel High School, was presented with the Best Vocal Performance Award for the “Little House of Horrors.”
