Britain’s biggest decor hates

A third of homeowners in the UK are not fans of their own home decor, according to a new survey, and textured – or ‘Artex’ – ceilings and wood chip wallpaper top the list. A 3D design was created following a poll of 2,000 homeowners, showcasing the most disliked elements of home decor.

The image features tired curtains, pelmets and an outdated fireplace. In addition, a worn-out rug covers a lino floor, old light fixtures hang from the ceiling and cheap shelving is mounted on the walls.

This comes after research by Shutterly Fabulous, which found that one-third of homeowners are not satisfied with their home decor but continue to live with it. The survey also highlighted that the living room and kitchen are the areas most in need of a makeover, with respondents expressing dislike for almost a quarter of the items in these rooms.

Nearly half (47 per cent) of those surveyed said they can’t afford to replace the furnishings they dislike, while 30 per cent tolerate them due to their functionality. Despite this, 39 per cent admit to being judgemental about other people’s decor. Interestingly, one in 10 respondents put up with items they can’t stand because their partner likes them.

The most disliked items in a living room were woodchip wallpaper, ‘Artex’ ceilings and lino, followed by tired curtains, unfashionable carpets and a dated fireplace. A Shutterly Fabulous spokesperson said: “The research has shown a lack of money for big changes and a lack of time are holding people back from having a style they love in their own home. However, sometimes it isn’t a complete overhaul that’s required to transform a room.”

The study revealed that those surveyed think their homes could benefit from a deep clean, a decluttering exercise, and hiding untidy electrical cables. Moving furniture, introducing indoor plants, and converting curtains to shutters were listed as effective ways to revamp dull rooms.

One in five (19 per cent) of participants regularly make little tweaks to their interiors to keep it looking fresh, but a surprising 38 per cent confessed to not refreshing their living spaces over the past half-decade.

Also, participants disclosed some decor decisions they regretted making, which included bold paint choices, spending large sums on pricy furniture only to reconsider later and bold feature walls.

the spokesperson added: “The research has really highlighted how people are living in spaces they’re not actually particularly happy with, which is a real shame.”
