LYNCHBURG, Va. – The James Madison women’s tennis duo of Cate Broerman and Hope Moulin upset three of the region’s top doubles teams en route to a semifinal berth at the 2023 ITA Atlantic Regional Championship (Oct. 19-22) at the Liberty Tennis Courts.
Broerman and Moulin went 4-1 in doubles play, which included a win over the region’s top team and three total victories against seeded teams. As a team, the Dukes won a combined eight matches, adding in four singles triumphs.
After an opening-round 8-5 win over Saint Joseph’s Charlotte Kordonowy and Victoria Tracy, the duo knocked off the region’s top-seeded squad of Virginia’s Melodie Collard and Annbelle Xu, 8-3.
In the round of 16 Saturday, Broerman and Moulin claimed an 8-6 victory against Penn State’s Alina Lebedeva and Yvonna Zuffova, who were the 16th-ranked squad. In Sunday’s quarterfinal, they beat yet again another elite tandem in fifth-seeded Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagoto of West Virginia in a tiebreak, at 8-7 (5).
Needing just one more win to not only reach the region title match and a berth in the ITA Indoor National Championship, Broerman and Moulin fell just short of Maryland’s seventh-seeded Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar, 6-3, 6-4.
On the singles side, Ines Oliveira claimed a first-round win over Loyola’s Christine Richiez, 6.-2, 6-2. Moulin won her consolation bout versus Loyola’s Liza Tankomovich, 6-0, 6-4, while Daria Munteanu registered a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Loyola’s Emi Shuykumar in a consolation.
In the singles main draw, after dropping a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision to 14th-seeded Slade Coetzee of Delaware, Broerman bounced back with a dominant consolation win over Howard’s Sifa Butcher, 6-0, 6-2.

JMU has completed fall tournament play and sets its eyes on the spring dual season, which will kick off in January. The spring slate will be announced in the coming weeks.
