Teams up with Special Olympics during Super Bowl Week

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton is taking in the Super Bowl this week in Las Vegas.

No question he is a little whimsical.

“It’s the reason I’m leaving Saturday,” Singleton told FOX31 from Radio Row. “I’ve already taken in too much dread from both sides.”

He’s leaving before the game Sunday and wouldn’t be there at all if it wasn’t for his deeply rooted connection to Special Olympics.

“For me as a coach, volunteer and ambassador, the one thing that has never changed is the passion that every Special Olympics participant has,” Singleton said. “It’s the smiles on everyone no matter the ability.”

His older sister Ashley is a long-time Special Olympian and Alex is passionate about the cause. This week at the Super Bowl, he is helping to launch a nutritional initiative for the organization.

“What’s so great about the ‘Snack Zone’ nutrition campaign is the fact that it’s not just for the athletes,” Singleton said. “I think it’s for everybody. The main focus is people in their 20s and 30s to learn these skills that they can take for the rest of their lives. Nutrition is something you can do 24/7.”

Colorado Special Olympian Health Messenger Vince Egan, a four-sport Olympian, is all in with Singleton.

“This helped me realize that eating better year round makes it better for me to play the sports that I love,” Egan said in Las Vegas.

The Broncos linebacker set the all-time single-season tackles record last season and Singleton is starting to get the itch again. Not just to play, but to prove.

“A lot of guys on this team had to learn how to win. I think winning is the hardest thing to do. Because most teachers give away games in the NFL, it’s one or two plays but they give them away and I think we as a team know how to win now.”
