Brownsville’s First-Ever Space Fest to Celebrate Innovation, Arts & Local Businesses, May 31st

BROWNSVILLE, Texas– The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) and Brownsville Conventions & Visitors Bureau (BCVB) proudly announce the inaugural Space Fest, a unique community event celebrating innovation, arts, and local businesses, while highlighting Brownsville’s commitment to supporting the space industry. Space Fest will take place on Friday, May 31, 2024 from 6PM to 10PM at 923 E Washington St. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

Space Fest promises a day filled with exciting activities for the whole family, including robotics demonstrations, drone shows, Cybertruck exhibition, a space costume contest, a vendors market featuring around 200 vendors, live painting sessions, a mural celebration, food trucks, drinks, free merchandise, DJ, live music, and much more! Best of all, the event is completely free for both vendors and attendees.

Alexa J. Perez, Director of Marketing & Communications at GBIC, expressed her enthusiasm for the event: “Space Fest is a fantastic opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate and showcase Brownsville’s innovation, arts, and local businesses. We’re committed to supporting the space industry and our local entrepreneurs. There is no vendor fee in our efforts to support local businesses, and entrance is free for all attendees. We’ll also provide thousands of free merchandise items featuring the Space Fest, GBIC, and Visit Brownsville brands. I’m also happy to share that SpaceX is supporting this event, and we’re honored to receive their backing.”

The event will feature three main pavilions: the Arts Pavilion, the Food & Drinks Pavilion, and the Future & Innovation Pavilion, each offering a unique experience for visitors. Space Fest will cover four blocks of downtown Brownsville, from E. Adams St. to E. Elizabeth St., and from E. 9th St. to E. 11th St., with the highlight being the mural “The Astronaut of the 956,” located at 923 E. Washington St. The main entrance is at the intersection of E. 10th St. and E. Adams St., next to the Fire Department.

Jerry Briones, Deputy Executive Director at GBIC, highlighted the partnership between both organizations: “I’m very proud of the incredible work that Alexa and Mali have led for Space Fest; this is an example of the great things we can do together when we join forces to serve our community. In this first-ever collaboration with the BCVB, we give special thanks to the teams of both organizations (GBIC and BCVB) and the city departments for their support, especially the Traffic Department, for helping us since the beginning with the logistics of the event.”

Malinalli Montesam, Manager of Brownsville Conventions & Visitors Bureau, highlighted the significance of the festival: “As Brownsville’s tourism organization, we are committed to promoting space tourism and fostering collaboration within our community. Space Fest is a significant event that celebrates our city’s role in the space industry and our dedication to innovative growth. We’re excited to see how this event will bring people together and showcase Brownsville as a hub for space tourism.”

Space Fest will also include a special mural celebration at approximately 7:00 PM. This event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cold fireworks, special recognitions, and remarks from distinguished guests. The festival will conclude with a special performance by DJ Ray Burger.
