Buck Mason operates 31 apparel stores across the United States, but this one in Pittsburgh, Penn., which opened last fall, is unique because it is the only one that carries home décor and furnishings.
Leanne Ford, an interior designer and Pittsburgh native, designed and curated the goods in the shop, whose apparel has a vintage, military-inspired flavor. The assortment of handcrafted, neutral toned home pieces includes splatter-painted dinnerware and accessories, glassware, various-sized vases, candles and fine artwork, all displayed on blond wood shelves or rough-hewn tables.
Intermingled with home goods are men’s and women’s white tee-shirts and pants, vintage sneakers, and stacks of architecture coffee table books. Scattered around are copies of Ford’s Feel Free magazines and handwritten notes from Ford about the provenance of an item, or why she thinks it is important. One note, placed beside a stack of black-rimmed white plates and bowls, references Ford’s collection for Crate & Barrel and notes “great price, great style (if I do say so myself).”
“What they’re doing as a retail environment is beautiful,” said Keith Recker, founder of Pittsburgh-based Table magazine, who nominated Buck Mason to be one of this year’s Retail Stars.
