Burt Young died at the age of 83. He was best known for his role as Rocky Balboa’s brother-in-law Paulie in the first six Rocky movies, which he shared with Sylvester Stallone.
Lynda Bensky, the late actor’s manager, told People Magazine in a statement that the news was true.
“Burt was an actor of tremendous emotional range. He could make you cry and he could scare you to death,” she said. “But the real pathos that I experienced was the poignancy of his soul. That’s where it came from.”
His daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told the New York Times that Young died on October 8 in Los Angeles. The paper was the first to report his death Wednesday.
Young was in more than 160 movies and TV shows over the course of his career. It became easy for people to trust him to play a range of characters, from tough guys in gangs to working men just trying to make it.
Besides himself, no one else had to try out for their part in Rocky. In 2009, Young talked about this in an interview with The Sweet Science. He said that Stallone saw him on the MGM lot and told the former Marine that he had to be in the movie.
