Busy holiday weekend of travel expected

Drivers are filling up their tanks ahead of traveling for Memorial Day weekend.

Becky and Patrick Suglia were filling up in Wyomissing on Tuesday. They paid $3.69.

“It’s terrible, it’s terrible. It could be better. It could be worse,” said Becky Suglia.

Currently, the average price of gas in the Reading area is around $3.75 for regular, similar to the state average, according to AAA.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike said it estimates 2.9 million drivers to travel to Memorial Day weekend destinations on the Turnpike.

It is a 1.5% increase from this time last year.

Friday is expected to be the busiest day, with 710,000 travelers on the road.

“We are going to Delaware,” said Becky Suglia.

The Pennsylvania State Police will have additional patrols out this weekend, according to the Turnpike, which said it will also have an increased number of Geico Safety Patrol safety teams out to respond to travelers in need of assistance.

Suglia said their gas tank should be ready to go for the trip.

“We just filled up now and I don’t do a ton of driving during the week, so we should be good until we hit the border,” said Becky Suglia.

And her husband Patrick said they are anticipating lower prices in Delaware.

“We actually always try to fill up before we cross the border coming back because we know it’s going to be higher here,” said Suglia.

Drivers heading out on Thursday or Friday should leave early, according to AAA.

It said the best time to head home on Monday is after 7 p.m.
