CAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Weekly Awards – Jan. 30
RICHMOND, Va. (January 30, 2024) – Delaware junior Karol Malirz was chosen as the CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Drexel junior Lorie Lemongo was selected as the CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. Honored as the men’s Doubles Team of the Week were Drexel’s Alex De Sousa and Alan Jesudason, and Campbell’s Mialy Ranaivo and Eeva Ristola received women’s Doubles Team of the Week accolades.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Karol Malirz, Jr., Delaware (Katowice, Poland)
Malirz earned key victories in singles and doubles to help Delaware defeat CAA foe William & Mary, 6-1, last Sunday. Competing at the No. 1 singles slot, the junior got past the Tribe’s Alexandre Leblanc, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Malirz and teammate Javier Ruiz also clinched the doubles point by edging W&M’s Sean Joseph and Leblanc, 7-6 (4) at the No. 3 position.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Alex De Sousa, Sr., Drexel (Canterbury, UK)
Alan Jesudason, Jr., Drexel (Berwyn, Pa.)
De Sousa and Jesudason split a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles and combined for three singles victories as Drexel started its season with a 2-0 mark. The Dragons’ duo bounced back from a 6-4 setback against Villanova to beat Mount St. Mary’s Elliot Stevens and Victor Mignot, 6-3, to help earn the doubles point in a 7-0 team triumph. De Sousa and Jesudason also posted three-set singles wins as DU defeated Villanova, 6-1.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Lorie Lemongo, Jr., Drexel (Yaounde, Cameroon)
Lemongo went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Drexel opened the season with victories over Rider (7-0) and Lehigh (6-1). The junior knocked off 116th-ranked Laila Fishman of Rider, 6-2, 7-6 (3), and rolled past Hamsa Javagal of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-1. Lemongo and partner Renata Lombera also contributed 6-1 wins at No. 1 doubles against both opponents.
CAA Women’s Tennis Double Team of the Week
Mialy Ranaivo, Jr., Campbell (Antananarivo, Madagascar)
Eeva Ristola, So., Campbell (Kotka, Finland)
Ranaivo and Ristola earned a victory at No. 1 doubles and added a pair of singles wins as Campbell blanked UNCG, 7-0, for its first win of the season. The Camels’ tandem topped UNCG’s Olivia Gallagher and Raegan Mitchell, 6-3, to help earn the doubles point. In singles, Ranaivo posted a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 1 slot and Ristola registered a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 2.
