Caledonia food co-op opening in old St. Johnsbury Walgreens

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – The Caledonia food co-op has finally secured a space for their community food hub. Since 2018, the Caledonia Food Co-op has been making an effort to place itself in the heart of St. Johnsbury. The organization has made a purchase on the old Walgreens building for about $2.2 million. In total, the project cost about $8 million, and the group plans to close on the building on April 10th. For the next couple of months, the co-op will be looking to come up with a model for the building, and hope to be open in the next year and a half.

“We were able to get one point nine million in loans. But we needed the rest, almost six hundred thousand through donations and the community did it. We will have to bring in an architect, fit up the building to fit the needs and make it an exciting food co-op and venue.” said board member, Mark Clough.

Construction for the building is expected to start this summer.
