WVU Tennis junior Camilla Bossi returned to action for the Mountaineers on the road against Marshall on Saturday in her first appearance of the season after a stint playing professionally.
Bossi will play over half the matches this spring while splitting time between the professional circuit and WVU Tennis.
“I got back on Wednesday at 9 p.m. I just practiced on Thursday and then we traveled yesterday. So yeah it’s tough,” Bossi said after the match against Marshall.
Bossi played in the second doubles slot and first singles spot in her return against Marshall. Bossi and graduate student Ting-Pei Chang led Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar 5-3 before the match was declared unfinished.
Bossi lost her first set in singles 6-2 before pulling out a close 7-5 second set victory. However, she fell 6-3 in the final set.
Despite the loss, she said she was happy to get used to tennis at the collegiate level again.
“I didn’t want the result that it was, but I’m really happy that I could adapt myself to the conditions that were here that are completely different where I was playing before in Florida,” Bossi said of her performance against Marshall.
To finish a two-match road trip, Bossi and Chang played in the second doubles slot against Samra Aksu and Cheng of Virginia Tech, losing 2-6.
Bossi checked off her first win of the season in the top seed against Virginia Tech’s Özlem Uslu 6-2, 6-0.
Head Coach Miha Lisac spoke on Bossi’s return along with what she brings to the program.
“Just a really good fight. Camilla wasn’t feeling her game. She might be feeling a little bit of pressure coming back and playing with the team,” Lisac said after the match. “It’s slightly different than playing individual events. Camilla is someone who brings a lot of energy, who plays, who battles extremely well and she showed all of those things today.”
Most recently, Bossi competed in the ITA/USTA W35 qualifying tournament in Naples, Florida, in the week of Jan. 15. She lost in the first qualifying round to Adriana Reami 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-10.
“It’s very good to be back and feel this energy of the girls,” Bossi said.
WVU Tennis will be back in Morgantown to play Indiana on Friday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Summit Tennis Academy.
