MARIETTA — For Reno resident Greg Dearth, attending the second annual Washington County Home Car Show/Trunk or Treat with his grandchildren and his friend’s 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and was a win-win proposition.

“They get to go get candy, and I get to participate in a car show,” he said.

After debuting last year, the event returned by popular demand of the residents of the County Home and guests who participated.

“We had such a great turnout the year before, and everybody kept saying before the day was over, ‘Can we do this again?’” said Diana Hall, activities/marketing director for the home, an assisted living facility for county residents.

Nearly 30 vehicles were entered for the car show and a chance to take home a unique trophy in a variety of categories, from residents’ and kids’ choice to Best Engine Bay and Best Under Construction. The prizes were made by Maintenance Director Frankie Hall, Diana Hall’s husband, staff members, and a resident using items found in the maintenance shop and elsewhere on the property.

“Us doing this event took everybody,” County Home Administrator Deanna Green said.

“It is an opportunity for our residents to enjoy a car show and kids trick or treating … and interact with the community,” she said.

Resident Jean Kettering got into the spirit, dressing as a clown and going to each vehicle alongside Hollie Orders, director of social services and admissions, to determine which entry would get her vote.

“I just enjoy watching and (seeing) the different people that are here,” Kettering said.

Marietta resident Shane O’Connor and his mother, Yvonne Holland, appropriately brought a yellow 1971 Dodge Demon to the Halloween event but their throwback costumes were less spooky.

“Good turnout, good people,” O’Connor said of the event. “It’s all about the kids and the people in the home.”
