Car slams into pole, bringing down powerline and causing I-85 traffic jam

North and southbound lanes near Exit 40 have reopened on Saturday morning, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — All lanes were shut down near Exit 40 on I-85 north and southbound after a car struck a power pole and brought the line down on the road on Saturday morning.

The scene, which is near North Graham Street, was cleared just before 10 a.m.

Medic said it was on-scene. It has not indicated whether or not there were any injuries after the car reportedly hit the pole on a nearby service road.

The Duke Energy spokesperson said cars hitting utility poles has become one of the utility’s top three causes of power outages in the last five years. In many cases it’s caused by distracted driving, the spokesperson said.

WCNC Charlotte has not yet confirmed the cause of this crash.

A North Carolina Department of Transportation fiber was also reportedly brought down across the road on Saturday morning.
