The monthly poem, “Speak Gently” by David Bates was read by Lucille Collins.

The background of the monthly song, “A Beautiful Life,” by William M. Golden was presented by President Gwinn followed by the club singing it together lead by Baker and Gullette.

Program leader Chris Collins presented a lecture, “The Everywhere Symphony: Chords, Modes, and Emotive Codes,” where he used powerpoint slides and audio visual media on an electronic white board with a printed handout given to the group. Chris spent many hours researching and compiling his presentation and shared that while music is analytical it is also an art form. Through musical examples such as popular songs, cinematic scores, Broadway tunes and more, he showed how composers have used various scales, modes and designed chord progressions to evoke an emotional response from the listener.

Following the program, President Gwinn led a brief business meeting. Secretary Kristy Cawthon read minutes of the September meeting, while Treasurer David Yarbrough handed out his report. Kristy gave an update on the Panola County Children’s Honor Choir, stating rehearsals are going well.

Music Club member Stephen George, who is serving as President in District 3 of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs, gave a report on the recent Fall Conference meeting held Saturday, Oct. 7 at the First Methodist Church of Carthage, saying it was well attended and he thanked all those who came and participated.

Heritage Committee chairman Sarah Baker reported that she is collecting memorabilia from club members to be used at the Carthage Music Club booth at City of Carthage 175th Birthday event on Nov. 11 at the Carthage Civic Center.

Hosts for the meeting were Becky Gullette, Dwaine Hubbard and Eric Lawrence.

Members attending were Baker, Kristy Cawthon, C. Collins, Lucille Collins, Carolyn Copeland, Stephen George, Gullette, Gwinn, Joyce Hughes, Elinor Humphreys, Nancy Langford, Eric Lawrence, McKillop, Elizabeth Morris, Claire Windham, Tori Windham and David Yarbrough.
