The Carthage Music Club met Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the choir room of the Frances B. Ross Music Building on the campus of Panola College.
The meeting began with President Jacinda Gwinn welcoming everyone to the annual Parade of American Music program. Member Nancy Langford introduced her guest, Donna Porter. Additional guests were Panola College students Abbie Cate Cawthon of Carthage and Lyle Harriman from Alvin, who is a sophomore music major and member of all Panola College ensembles.
Sarah Baker, choral director, and Becky Gullette, accompanist, lead members in singing, “The Star Spangled Banner,” while Tori Windham lead recitation of the National Federation of Music Clubs Collect.

The background of the monthly song, “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” by Cecil Francis Alexander was presented by Nancy Langford, followed by the club singing it together lead by Baker and Gullette. The monthly poem, “Music” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, was read by Carolyn Copeland.
The Carthage Music Club observes American Music Month annually in November through the Parade of American Music program. This year Carthage resident and composer Mike McGowan lead with his program, “Jazz (American Art Forms).”
Mike began his presentation sharing that he began composing when he was in sixth grade band. He says that each of his musical experiences throughout the years have contributed to his skill at composing as well as moments of inspiration where the music comes to him all at once.

While using a white board to display his original composition for the 50 piece Cello Choir of director Evgeni Raychev, cello professor at Stephen F. Austin University, “Latin Dances for Violoncello Choir,” Mike also handed out a score to the group. As the computer generated music played, Mike pointed out the jazz harmonies he used with Latin rhythms to arrive at the five part cello dances: Merengue, Tango and Rhumba, The second composition, an arrangement of “East of the Sun,” was for East Texas jazz band Sounds of Swing of which Mike has been a member. He says it’s surprising to hear from musicians all around the world who are playing his music. He can’t imagine when he would stop composing and says that his greatest joy is hearing his compositions come to life through the performers.
The program was followed by refreshments provided by hostesses Tori Windham, Joyce Hughes and Elizabeth Morris.
A brief business meeting concluded the evening with the secretary’s report read by Kristy Cawthon, followed by the treasurer’s report handed out by David Yarbrough. Heritage Committee chairman Sarah Baker reported that the club was well represented by club members and had numerous grade school student visitors at the Carthage Music Club booth at the City of Carthage 175th Birthday event on Nov. 11 at the Carthage Civic Center. Kristy shared that the Panola County Children’s Honor Choir recently sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and “We Honor You” at a veterans event. Their next events will be Panola College’s Christmas in Carthage program and Carthage Book Club’s annual Tour of Homes. Announcements for future musical community activities were made by David and Tori.
