Celebrating Thanksgiving in New Orleans fashion at the Fairgrounds
DOTTING HATS TO WIN THE PURSE. THE THANKSGIVING TRADITION AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AND HOW IT’S BEING CELEBRATE. AND BAYOU CLASSIC EVENTS HAVE BEGUN. HOW THE BIG RIVALRY BETWEEN THE JAGUARS OF SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AND THE TIGERS OF GRAMBLING STATE IS PLAYING OUT. AND IT IS A CLOUDY, DRIPPY, CHILLY THANKSGIVING. BUT IT’S THANKSGIVING AND I’LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN OUR RAIN CHANCES GO UP. WDSU NEWS AT 5:00 STARTS RIGHT NOW. LIVE LOCAL LATE BREAKING. THIS IS WDSU NEWS AT FIVE. HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE. IN NEW ORLEANS. THANKSGIVING TRADITION LIKE NO OTHER. INSTEAD OF THE DINING ROOM TABLE, THOUSANDS GALLOPED TO THE FAIRGROUNDS FOR THE 99TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING CLASSIC. YEAH, AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND WDSU. REPORTER CASSIE SCHERM LIVE ALL DRESSED UP FOR THE RACES. AND CASSIE DONNING HER HAT. HAPPY THANKSGIVING, CASSIE. LOOKING VERY FESTIVE. HOW WAS IT OUT THERE TODAY? HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU, TOO, AS WELL. GUYS, THIS WAS MY VERY FIRST TIME AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AND IT’S BEEN A BLAST. I HAD TO JOIN IN ON THE FUN, HAVE MY OWN WDSU DERBY HAT RIGHT HERE. SO WE WERE READY TO GO TO CHEER ON THOSE RACERS. BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE JOINING ME IN THE CROWD TODAY SAY THIS IS ONE WAY TO CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING IN A VERY NEW ORLEANS FASHION. YOUNG AND OLD, A COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER TO GIVE THANKS AT THE TRACKS, RIGHT. WE HAVE MORE FUN HERE THAN COOKING. COME HERE. YOU COULD BE COOKING AND SERVING PEOPLE. YEAH, AND IT’S A TRADITION. IT’S LIKE A NEW ORLEANS TRADITION CELEBRATING AND CHEERING. AT THE THANKSGIVING CLASSIC. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE COLORFUL FOLKS THAT ARE COMING IN WITH THE OUTFITS AND THE HATS AND THE WHOLE NINE YARDS, IT’S JUST A FUN, EPIC DAY. AND OF COURSE, IN A NEW ORLEANS FASHION FOR NEW ORLEANS, WE HAVE A COSTUME CLOSET, PROBABLY AND A CRAFTING CLOSET. AND SO JUST BRING EVERYTHING OUT AND PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER TO CREATIVITY. I’VE SEEN HERE WITH ALL THE HATS HAS BEEN IT’S THE BEST PART OF COME TO THANKSGIVING AND TO SEE EVERYBODY IS CREATIVITY. YOU KNOW WHAT NEW ORLEANS IS VERY GOOD AT THAT. I DO A LOT OF HEADPIECES FOR FLOATS IN DIFFERENT PARADES. SO I’M USED TO WORKING FAST. IT DIDN’T REALLY TAKE LONG. IT’S A TRADITION THAT SPANS DECADES. IT’S ACTUALLY THE THIRD OLDEST TRACK IN THE COUNTRY. IT DATES BACK. IT DATES BACK TO OVER 150 YEARS AGO, CREATING TIMELESS MEMORIES FOR OVER 10,000 PEOPLE EACH YEAR. GENERATIONS UPON GENERATIONS THAT WOULD BRING THEIR KIDS OUT HERE. AND NOW YOU HAVE THAT GENERATION BRINGING THEIR KIDS OUT HERE. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE FAMILY THAT WE HAVE MAYBE IN OUR HOUSE, BUT WE CREATE A LARGER COMMUNITY TO BE TOGETHER. WHETHER THEY COME TO PEOPLE, WATCH. OR JUST PLACE THEIR BETS ON THE HORSES. BOLDER AND WISER. I DON’T KNOW WHAT I’M DOING BETTING ON THE HORSES, BUT I TRY, WIN OR LOSE. ONE. SURE BET. IS EVERYONE OUT AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IS FEELING THANKFUL THIS THANKSGIVING. I’M THANKFUL FOR MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY, THANKFUL FOR MY NEW GRANDBABY. HIS NAME IS FINN. LAUGHTER I’M THANKFUL FOR BEING HERE. EVEN THE BLESSINGS THAT YOU DON’T SEE. I’M THANKFUL FOR THAT. AND THIS CITY AND EVERYTHING. I AM THANKFUL FOR LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS BECAUSE I LOVE MY CITY. IT’S AN ECLECTIC THE MOST WONDERFUL CITY I’VE EVER LIVED IN. HAPPY THANKSGIVING, LULING. SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR NOW. I MET SO MANY COOL PEOPLE AND GREAT PEOPLE. AWESOME COSTUMES, A LOT OF FUN HERE AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. BUT IF YOU MISSED TODAY, DON’T WORRY. THIS RACE SEASON GOES TILL MARCH OF NEXT YEAR. SO PLENTY OF TIME TO COME OUT HERE TO THE RACETRACK TO CATCH SOME RACES AND MAYBE EVEN PUT SOME BETS DOWN. BUT FOR NOW, REPORTING HERE AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, I’M CASSIE SCHERM. BACK TO YOU, KATHY. SOME NICE HATS OUT THERE, BUT I PERSONALLY THINK Y
