Central NY man crashes into tree, killing passenger in high speed chase with police, troopers say

Whitestown, N.Y. — A driver involved in a high-speed chase with state police Tuesday in Oneida County crashed a car into a tree, killing a passenger, troopers said.

Killed in the crash was Shana Reahoo Chourb, 22, of Utica.

The driver, Howard N. Griswold Jr., 24, of Utica, was stopped by police around 2:12 a.m. on State Route 365 near Blackmans Corners Road in Verona for speeding at 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, said Trooper Jack Keller, a state police spokesperson.

As troopers were talking with Griswold, he suddenly rolled up his window and drove off at high speed in an Acura ILX, Keller said.

Police chased Griswold east on State Route 365 and then onto Lamphear Road, where he drove through a red light, eventually making a right turn onto Monument Road, Keller said.

The car continued on Monument Road before making another turn on Sutliff Road, where police lost sight of it. They found the car had crashed into a tree and came to a stop in the front lawn of a house at 6405 State Route 233 in Whitestown, Keller said.

The car crashed just under nine miles from where police first stopped the car in Verona.

Griswold was taken to Rome Health Hospital before being transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with severe internal injuries, Keller said.

Chourb was pronounced dead at Rome Health Hospital.

The state Attorney General’s Office is investigating the crash. The office is required by state law to look into all fatal incidents involving police officers.
