Centre Co. anti-hunger program plans to provide more education on nutrition; help children in-need

In our area, there have been new developments in school meal programs and backpack distributions for kids in need of a healthy meal.

In Centre County, the YMCA anti-hunger program is looking to add more educational features.

“We went to three schools this morning and you see the kids’ faces just light up.”

Keeping kids fed is a priority for food assistance programs.

In recent years, the anti-hunger program has offered the younger generation hands-on lessons for growing produce, both in the field and in schools.

Now, it’s onto menu planning.

“We want to teach kids about proper nutrition. So, we’ll be doing a lot of taste testing. A lot of these kids are going home after school and they’re trying to make something; we’re going to come up with some simple things they can make and are good for them. I think it’s going to be a win-win.”

Outreach remains a priority for food distribution.

“They now realize that the programs we’ve put out there are a place they can go, and they don’t feel like they’re judged. That’s really the most important part.”

We are moving into the time of the year, the end of year holidays, when many are hoping to provide something extra.

For the Centre County YMCA, they’re bringing back their “Blessings in a Box,” with plenty of menu items.

“Some don’t like turkey, or they don’t like ham. So, we’re going to give out store gift cards so they can pick out the meat they want for their Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.”
