SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Firefighters are becoming the victims of car break-ins and it’s all caught on camera.
Authorities are trying to figure out who the people in this surveillance video are.
Chatham Emergency Services says it shows two men breaking into cars at a local fire station.
Chatham County firefighters at a local station say they had things stolen from their personal cars while on duty.
Firefighters are calling them senseless and aggravating.
They say these incidents are a serious concern for the safety and security of first responders here.
“They’re aggravated. They feel like we shouldn’t be targeted,” said Capt. Carl Sapp, Chatham Emergency Services.
Captain Carl Sapp with Chatham Emergency Services’ fire division says the thieves – caught on this surveillance video – have taken mostly small amounts of money and minor personal items.
He says it’s disheartening for firefighters to find items stolen after putting their lives on the line.
“To come back and find out someone was taking advantage of you while you were either here sleeping or out serving the community, it doesn’t feel good,” said Sapp.
According to emergency crews, the thefts occurred over the past couple months at Station 10 off Ogeechee Road and Heathcote Circle, the most recent happening around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Sapp says he believes the thieves are targeting surrounding neighborhoods and the fire station just happened to be nearby.
“They’re looking for opportunity. Find a door unlocked, they’re going to take what they can and take off,” said Sapp.
Chatham Emergency Services now reminding fire crews and residents to lock their personal cars before starting work.
“Taking the time to do that, even though they’re trying to get into the station and start their job. Go back out take that second, lock your truck, make sure everything that’s valuable is hidden,” said Sapp.
Chatham Emergency Services says the men caught on that surveillance footage are in their late teens or twenties, wearing hoodies and face masks.
They’re asking anyone with information to call them or the Chatham County Police Department at 912-652-6920.
