Chery Automobiles establishing technological leadership.

Currently, the automotive industry has entered a new era, with a new technological revolution reshaping the industry landscape. Each automotive company finds itself at a crucial juncture in the transition between old and new tracks. Standing at the starting point of 26 years of development, Chery is comprehensively advancing in the field of automotive intelligence, fortifying its technological attributes, establishing technological leadership, and accelerating its stride into intelligence.

Leading the Industry into a New Era of Intelligence

In the field of automotive intelligence, Chery initiated R&D based on active safety technology as early as 2010. Since 2018, to promote the layout of intelligent automotive businesses and establish core capabilities to meet group intelligent business needs, Chery has internally consolidated resources and externally engaged in technology and capital cooperation in areas such as intelligent connectivity, autonomous driving, data operations, intelligent manufacturing, and mobile travel services. In March 2019, Chery Group upgraded its intelligent business to become the seventh major business segment within the group. Through resource integration and chain integration innovation, Chery developed in-vehicle software, intelligent, and digital products, engaged in digital operations, and provided services for complete vehicles and users. This approach aims to achieve full-lifecycle value management for automobiles, spanning from design and manufacturing to sales, after-sales, and user utilization. This promotes the upgrading and digital transformation of the automotive industry.

Guided by established strategic objectives, Chery Group’s intelligent upgrade is continuously gaining momentum. It has established intelligent R&D centers in Silicon Valley, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhu, and other locations. The company is intensifying the recruitment and training of intelligent talents and currently has over 1,000 personnel in the field of intelligent automotive business. Team members possess years of R&D experience in the intelligent connected vehicle field, forming initial core technology R&D capabilities in intelligent driving, intelligent connectivity, and mobile travel technologies.

Currently, Chery has applied for more than 500 patents and been granted over 200 patents in the field of intelligent connected vehicles. Among these, “the method and device for acquiring driving status information” received the 20th China Patent Excellence Award. In other achievements, the “platform development and technological application of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System)” won the second prize for the Science and Technology Award of Anhui Province in 2018. The “key technology research and application of autonomous driving based on intelligent transportation and vehicular networks” was honored with the title “IoT Integration Innovation and Convergence Application” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2018. In 2019, in the “2019 Automotive Patent Innovation Index” released by the CATARC (China Automotive Technology and Research Center), Chery ranked among the top 20 globally in the comprehensive patent index in the field of intelligent connectivity.

Focusing on the R&D of Intelligent Driving and Cabins

As one of the earliest Chinese automotive companies to explore intelligent driving. Chery focuses on the R&D of intelligent driving and cabins. In the realm of advanced driver assistance, by 2018, some Chery models were equipped with L2-level ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Technologies such as ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking), LKA (Lane Keeping Assist), and APA (Automated Parking Assist) have been applied across the entire Chery product range.

For autonomous driving, Chery has independently undertaken the development of the third generation of intelligent driving technology. The company has mastered a complete key technology system spanning perception, decision-making, and control execution, with these key technologies widely applied on various automotive platforms. Main products include the development of an autonomous driving platform in early 2014, leading to the creation of the Arrizo 7 platform autonomous driving vehicle, equipped with features such as ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking), and LKA (Lane Keeping Assist). In 2015, Chery’s intelligent vehicle team collaborated with Baidu to jointly develop intelligent driving technology. In August 2018, Chery independently developed the “Remote Summoning and Intelligent Parking” functionality operated through a mobile app. In 2019, Chery’s independently developed intelligent driving solution expanded its application to multiple vehicle models. Regarding the conditions for autonomous driving development, Chery achieved the qualification for open-road testing in Chongqing and an autonomous driving road test license in California, USA, in 2019, and secured an autonomous driving test permit in Hefei, China, in August 2020. In 2019, Chery also collaborated with China Telecom to establish a 5G Intelligent Car Joint Laboratory.

In the realm of intelligent cabins, Chery achieved a milestone in 2016 with the implementation of the Intelligent Cloud Interconnected Driving System in its series of products. By 2018, the intelligent system had been successfully applied to models like the Tiggo 8 and the Arrizo. In 2019, Chery integrated “artificial intelligence and interconnected ecology”, incorporating technologies such as “AI image processing” and “enhanced facial recognition” into new products, including the Tiggo 8. In 2020, the upgraded intelligent system was applied to the Tiggo 8 model, featuring a high-speed processor, comprehensive functionality, support for AR (Augmented Reality)-enhanced navigation, and robust semantic understanding capabilities.

Based on information from Chery Tech Day 2023, Chery plans to leverage five world-class technological advantages in “safety, energy consumption, space, intelligent cabins, and intelligent driving”. This strategy aims to propel the entire Chery automotive product lineup forward, redefining the concept of the “new car”. The application of these technologies is expected to result in a travel experience that is not only more low-carbon and convenient but also more intelligent and enjoyable. This vision seeks to provide global users with enhanced convenience and pleasure in their travel experiences.
