Christina Aguilera Takes “Burlesque” from Screen to Stage

Pop icon and film star Christina Aguilera is set to gift audiences a stage rendition of the celebrated movie musical, “Burlesque.” The 2010 big-screen sensation is poised for a theatrical rebirth, with Aguilera donning the role of executive producer. According to industry insider Entertainment Weekly, fans can anticipate the musical’s debut in the UK in the “near future.”

Having made waves in the movie as the ambitious small-town girl with a powerful voice, Aguilera’s move from acting to production generates considerable buzz. Not only will the stage version preserve the essence of a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club and the journey of a girl finding “love, family, and success,” it will also feature the craft of the original film’s director, Steven Antin. Collaborating with Kate Wetherhead for this theatrical venture, the duo promises a compelling script harmonizing with the songs penned by Aguilera, Diane Warren – an Academy Award nominee, and the renowned pop sensation, Sia. Further elevating the musical landscape of the stage adaptation are new compositions from talents Todrick Hall and Jess Foley.

Antin, while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm. “Yes, the stage musical adaptation is happening; very exciting,” he stated. In a 2020 interview, he shared insights about the project, noting, “It’s inspired by Burlesque: a re-imagination…It morphs what’s best about TV, Broadway, film, and digital entertainment. It’s a hybrid television event/series taking the movie to the next level.”

The movie “Burlesque,” which marked Aguilera’s grand entrance into the world of cinema, boasted a star-studded cast including legendary Cher, the versatile Stanley Tucci, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane, Dianna Agron, and Kristen Bell. The film’s prowess was underscored by its three Golden Globe nominations, one being for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and two nods for its original songs ‘Bound To You’ and ‘You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.’

The journey from reel to real is always an intriguing transition. As “Burlesque” prepares to sashay from screen to stage, audiences worldwide, especially in the UK, are undoubtedly in for a treat. Under the visionary guidance of Christina Aguilera, this adaptation promises to be a harmonious blend of nostalgia and fresh, theatrical flair.
