With classic Christmas tunes playing on the radio and return of old family traditions, the Christmas season often brings recollections of prior holidays.
At least, that’s the goal for Ron George, Executive Producer of the show, “Christmas in My Home Town.”
Returning for its 18th year, the variety show evokes the holiday specials of TV’s early days, when stars were joined by their families in a cozy front room setting.
“We are trying to re-create what we remember from the Andy Williams Christmas programs, that feeling of being invited into their home for a warm and cheerful holiday gathering,” George said in the show’s press release.
Although steeped in holiday nostalgia, “Christmas in My Home Town” is also about a look to the future. In the show’s announcement, George informed audiences that longtime cast member Emily Jessen — and her newborn baby — will be taking this year off. However, he was quick to offer reassurances that she will return next year along with the newest cast member, Baby George.
The production is a true family affair, created by families as well as performed for them. The Georges’ grandchildren not only perform in every show, but they also work alongside their grandparents to create the best show possible for the community. From the very first year, “Christmas in My Home Town” has been a labor of love for the entire cast and crew.
George’s wife, Sharron, spends all year making up the baskets that are raffled off as part of the show’s fundraising efforts. And the entire George family pitches in to help with setting up and tearing down the set, as well as helping prepare the food to feed the cast members.
Planning for the show is an extensive process that starts in July. In five months the crew is busy building sets, learning songs, adding new props to the show, and always trying to outdo the last performance.
The performance will begin at 7 p.m. at the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre, 1010 Ulatis Drive, Vacaville.
Tickets are $22 and may be purchased at the Box Office in person or by phone: (707) 469-4013.
