Chubbuck woman sentenced to probation for attempting to take food in exchange for ‘I.O.U.’

POCATELLO — A woman caught trying to take groceries from a Pocatello grocery store has been sentenced to probation.

The 30-year-old woman told officers she intended to take the groceries on an “I.O.U.” When asked what she meant, the woman allegedly said she planned to take the food she needed, then, when she received her food stamps, return and give the food stamps to the store.

Pocatello police received a call reporting the theft around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The affidavit says the woman was attempting to take $1,029.56 worth of merchandise — including food, makeup, alcohol and dog treats.

The woman told officers that a family member had recently stolen food from her house and that she needed food but did not have the means to pay for it.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage provided by the store’s loss prevention.

The video shows the woman enter the store with a shopping cart, the affidavit says. She then collects items from the store before attempting to leave the store through the entrance door, but was stopped by loss prevention officers.

The woman was arrested and taken to Bannock County Jail, where she was booked.

Though she was initially charged with felonies for grand theft and burglary, the woman pleaded guilty to an amended misdemeanor charge of petit theft in exchange for a dismissal of the burglary charge.

She was sentenced to two years supervised probation by Magistrate Judge Scott Axline, who granted the woman a withheld judgement. The woman has been ordered to pay $182.50 in fees and fines with a restitution request pending. She has also been ordered to complete an approved treatment program.
