Citing need to ‘get it right,’ Jersey City Council rejects mental health crisis response program contract

The implementation of a mental health crisis response program in Jersey City will be further delayed after a contract with the Jersey City Medical Center was unanimously rejected by councilmembers who cited at Wednesday’s meeting the need to “get it right.”

The council’s 8-0 vote against a $4.2 million contract for a 911 program — which would send mental health workers and EMTs to mental health crises instead of police — is a stunning rebuke of Mayor Steve Fulop’s administration’s proposal from both the mayor’s critics and allies on the council. Councilwoman Denise Ridley was not at the meeting.
