On Friday, the City of Richmond, Richmond’s Parks and Recreation Department – along with Bell Engineering and Allen Company – broke ground for the Richmond Regional Sports Complex.
The city approved the purchase of the almost 300-acre tract of land off of Goggins Lane and Tates Creek Road just north of South Keeneland Drive back in November of 2021. The city officially closed on it in March of the following year.
“This place is a fulfillment of what I like to say, that Richmond is poised for greater greatness,” Richmond mayor Robert Blythe said to the media at the event.
Mayor Blythe pointed out that there are times when recruiting new businesses to the city of Richmond, those businesses will look around the city to the parks and other city amenities to see what the city can offer employees of a potential company. He mentioned specifically that they will look at something like what Richmond Regional Sports Complex will become, or a park such as Lake Reba, and what quality of life benefits can be offered.
According to the Parks 2020 Master Plan, the Parks Department was looking to meet a list of 10 needs, with the completion of this park, they will have met six of those, according to Vice Chair of the Parks Board Dan McBride.
Amenities will include 11 full-sized soccer fields, five of which will be artificial turf. There will be five fields that will have multiple purposes as well. Two of the 11 soccer fields will be utilized for youth football. Pickleball courts will also be included at the park along with tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, a dog park, picnic shelters, and miles of multi-use walking and running trails.
The project is slated for completion in the spring of 2026 at the price of $52 million.
