Cleveland-Cliffs, one of the Region’s largest steelmakers, recently made a donation to fund youth arts education in the Region.
The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation, the charitable wing of the Ohio-based steelmaker, the largest flat-rolled steel producer in the country, donated $18,000 to the Chesterton Arts Center to expand its Youth Arts Outreach program, a partnership with the Duneland YMCA and Duneland Boys & Girls Club.
The donation allowed the Chesterton Art Center to go from providing weekly youth arts instruction at just the Boys & Girls Club in Chesterton to be able to offer after-school education at all five YMCA elementary school sites simultaneously. Cleveland-Cliff’s gifts doubled the number of young artists to be educated through the program.
“We’ve been dreaming of expanding our Youth Arts Outreach Program, and I am beyond ecstatic that this can now become reality. Art is a vital learning tool, and we are pleased to be able to serve so many additional students thanks to this grant,” Chesterton Art Center Program Director Jillian Bridgeman said.

The Chesterton Art Center launched the program in 2021 and expanded it last year. It provides visual arts instruction during the school year to students at no cost to them or their families.
Cleveland-Cliffs is one of the Region’s latest employers with more than 7,500 steelworkers and operations in Burns Harbor, Indiana Harbor, Gary, Riverdale and New Carlisle.
