College sports: Gustavus upset No. 7 Saint John’s

ST. PETER — Gustavus Adolphus quarterback George Sandven went 25 of 37 for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the Gusties’ 38-35 MIAC win over No. 7 Saint John’s Saturday.

Sandven’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Rohee Konde late in the third quarter ended up being the game-winning score. No points were scored in the fourth quarter. Konde made six catches for 85 yards.

Walker Britz scored three rushing touchdowns for Gustavus, while Matthew Carreon and Caden Kleinschmidt caught touchdowns. Jake Breitbach made 10 catches for 122 yards.

Carson Dekam finished with six tackles and a sack for Gustavus.

The Gusties (4-3) play Saturday at St. Olaf.

Volleyball: Marlee Turn led Gustavus with 13 kills and 10 digs in a 3-0 MIAC home win over Saint Benedict.

The Gusties won 25-21, 25-18, 25-11.

Madi Kes added 12 kills for GAC, while Kasie Tweet had 38 assists.

Gustavus (20-6, 8-0 in MIAC) plays Friday at Augsburg.

Minnesota State

Women’s hockey: Charlotte Akervik scored for the Mavericks in a 4-1 WCHA loss to Minnesota Duluth at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

Akervik’s goal, which came at 2:28 of the second period, tied the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs scored the final three goals of the game.

Shots on goal favored UMD 25-22.

The Mavericks (2-4, 0-4 in WCHA) host St. Cloud State next weekend.

Volleyball: Sophie Tietz led MSU with nine kills and three blocks in a 3-0 NSIC road loss to St. Cloud State.

The Mavericks fell 25-13, 25-15, 25-21.

Brooke Bolwerk had 15 assists and five digs for MSU, and Elizabeth Dille added five kills.

Women’s cross country: MSU finished fourth with 113 points at the NSIC championships at Bismarck, North Dakota.

Winona State won the meet with 38 points.

For the Mavericks, MaKenna Thurston (20:49.90) finished fourth overall, and Emily Cunningham (21:14.70) took eighth. Both earned all-conference honors.

MSU will compete at the region meet Nov. 4 at Joplin, Missouri.

Men’s cross country: Tanner Maier took third with a time of 24:34.70 for MSU at the NSIC championships at Bismarck, North Dakota.

MSU finished fourth as a team with a score of 117. Augustana won with 56 points.

MSU’s Ray Ure took 18th at 25:00.6.

The Mavericks will compete at the region meet Nov. 4 at Joplin, Missouri.

Swimming: MSU won eight of 16 events en route to home victories over Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State at Highland Pool.

Abby Gronholz, Megan Schultz, Brianna Shroyer and Ella DeFever won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.78 for the Mavericks. Gronholz, Schultz and DeFever also won individual events.

MSU will host St. Catherine next weekend.

Bethany Lutheran

Volleyball: Lexiss Trygg finished with eight kills for the Vikings in a 3-0 UMAC road loss to Minnesota Morris.

Bethany lost 25-11, 28-26, 25-11.

Esther Peeters finished with 13 assists and 10 digs for the Vikings.

Bethany (6-15, 3-7 in UMAC) will host Northwestern Friday.
