Connected vehicle technology to improve highway safety in Australia wins ITS award

Kapsch TrafficCom has announced that a project in Queensland, Australia, which utilizes its cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) technology, has won the Connected and Automated Vehicle Award at the ITS Australia Awards 2024.

Kapsch TrafficCom is one of the collaborating partners in the project spearheaded by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The technology employed utilized portable C-ITS roadside stations to showcase enhanced safety in Australian roadworks.

Matthew McLeish, EVP for the APAC region at Kapsch TrafficCom, said, “I am proud of the team for delivering an award-winning project. The cooperation with TMR as well as with other project partners was an excellent experience and shows how collaboration can push the industry forward, and how our C-ITS technology makes traffic safer for all stakeholders.”

To be ready for wider deployment of the technology on state road networks, TMR organised a C-ITS showcase in early May 2023 where multiple common roadworks scenarios that represent safety-critical connected vehicle use cases were demonstrated. Queensland’s C-ITS deployment includes a production grade European compliant Security Credential Management System (SCMS) for message communications. Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to be one of the suppliers, showing multiple separate roadworks warnings that broadcast a variety of safety-relevant messages directly into vehicles.

This technology is similar to the one that Kapsch TrafficCom is currently rolling out along thousands of kilometers of German highways, where its roadside technology is also used to make roadworks areas safer. Under the project, mobile barrier boards indicating limited-time work sites will be equipped with so-called ITS Roadside Stations (IRS), which send warning messages directly to approaching vehicles. This can reduce the risk of accidents in dangerous roadworks areas, as drivers are informed more quickly and directly about roadworks.
