Devendra Kheres, a poet and an avid reader of Nepali literature, published his first poetry collection, ‘Rungri ko Bayan ra Nadi Kinara’, in 2008 in Hong Kong.
In 2017, his second poetry collection, titled ‘Columbus Yatra’, was published in England. This collection explores diverse themes through poetic verses, showcasing his versatility and imaginative prowess.
Khotang-born Kheres currently divides his time between living in England and Hong Kong.
In this conversation with the Post’s Anish Ghimire, he discusses his fondness for literature, ideal reading environment, and finding a balance between reading classics and contemporary works.
Can you share a bit about your love for literature and what does poetry mean to you?
In my early years, I was quite introverted. I took solace in listening to Radio Nepal, enjoying radio dramas even if I didn’t fully grasp them. School days involved regular reading of stories, poems and essays, with these writers and poets considered as significant figures in literature. Their words held a certain power that intrigued me, making me wonder who they are and what shapes them.
During high school, literary magazines caught my interest, sparking a newfound passion for writing. Exploring literary works, especially immersing myself in the world of poetry, felt both easy and enjoyable.
Poetry, even in just a few words, possesses the remarkable ability to touch hearts. Delving into the depth of emotions, it becomes a vehicle that both suppresses and expresses thoughts. Poems that place the realities of society at the forefront, rather than just imaginative creations, infuse life with vitality.
What are some of your all-time favourite literary works, and how have they influenced your own writing?
I began writing poetry inspired by ‘Ghumne Mechmathi Andho Manche’ by poet Bhupi Sherchan. His poems may be short, but they are profound and emotionally charged. His works addressed national and international social issues in a powerful manner.
Similarly, Shankar Lamichhane’s essay collection ‘Abstrayak Chintan: Pyaj’ is another favourite read. Lamichhane has thoroughly analysed the contemporary social environment from various perspectives. To become a skilled writer, one must know how to write on a variety of subjects. Lamichhane’s essays, delving into national and international issues, showcase a deep understanding and analysis from various angles.
After reading the literary works of such eminent creators, a kind of creative awakening occurred in me.
Do you have a specific time or place where you like to read? What’s your ideal reading environment?
For me, there is no specific place or time for studying. However, I feel the importance of reading in solitude or amid nature rather than in crowded or noisy places. Reading a book by a tranquil lake, in the jungle or by the river or ocean shore creates a sense of being immersed in the words. Even after finishing reading, the feeling of being lost in the words continues.
When I write, sometimes I find inspiration from a quiet place. I feel that to create powerful and impactful creations with words and sentences, a solitary and peaceful environment is crucial. Such an environment contributes to the excellence of creativity.
How do you balance reading classics with exploring contemporary works?
Any subject has its own impact and significance. Reading classical works contribute to the expansion of vast knowledge. Appreciating the valuable aspects derived from classical studies and combining them with subjects relevant to contemporary society allows for the creation of innovative ideas. Creating excellence in any field requires sufficient knowledge, and it is not possible to produce outstanding creations without it.
In today’s dynamic society, sticking solely to classical conventions may hinder progress, and embracing new perspectives becomes crucial. Some social norms may evolve over time, and it is essential to adapt to these changes. However, we should not completely abandon the foundation where we stand.
How do you seek out diverse voices in literature, and why is it important for your reading experience?
The perspective of viewing society can vary for everyone. Currently, the society we observe is rich in diversity. The development of communication and transportation allows for quick exploration of many places in a short time, along with the exchange of new information. This situation is both convenient and challenging.
Writing literature that is representative of society means incorporating current social viewpoints in literary works. It is crucial to write tales and narratives based on experiences that people have had or that society has encountered. For this reason, I make an effort to read a wide variety of books. Each time I read a new writer’s work, I discover something about their experiences that is distinct and fascinating.
How does literature, including poetry, contribute to cultural and societal conversations?
It is said that literature is the mirror of society. Literature, written by encompassing diverse aspects of society, brings vitality. Poetry, in particular, touches the hearts of readers. When poetry brings various aspects, such as religious, cultural, and political, into the limelight, society finds opportunities to guide itself.
The literature that encompasses various events in society not only integrates but also helps identify what is right and wrong. Poetry, with its diverse subjects, has a quick impact on society when written on contemporary topics. Bringing forth the truths of various cultural and community aspects in society through creation is like opening an umbrella against the rain of changes in society.
