COS Sports Notes: Giants to host Reedley in men and women’s basketball


College of the Sequoias’ men’s basketball team hosts two conference games this week, with a chance to climb back into first place in the process.

The Giants, 4-2 in conference play and 16-4 overall, host Reedley (0-6) Wednesday at 5 p.m. and co-leader Columbia (5-1) Saturday at 3 p.m.

After dropping its first two games, Sequoias has roared back to win its next four, including a 79-62 win over Fresno Saturday. The Giants are ranked No. 15 in the state and eighth in Northern California.

Women’s Basketball

COS had a 26-game conference winning streak snapped Saturday night, falling to Fresno 77-73. The Giants were behind by 19 at halftime, rallied to tie the game after three quarters but fell short in its fourth quarter bid.

Sequoias, 14-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play behind Fresno, has one game scheduled this week — hosting Reedley Wednesday at 7 p.m. COS is ranked 17th in the state and ninth in Northern California.

Baseball

The baseball team hosts four games this week, including its home opener Tuesday against Bakersfield at 2 p.m. COS will also host Marin in a three-game series, Thursday at 2 p.m., Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at noon.

Sequoias opened its season last weekend by splitting two games at Hancock.

Softball

The Giant softball team, off to a 2-0 start, plays its home opener Tuesday by hosting Modesto in a doubleheader starting at noon.

COS won a pair of games last weekend in Sacramento, defeating the Panthers and Siskiyous.

Women’s Tennis

Sequoias hosted Canyons Monday in its home opening match, after opening the season with an 8-1 win over Antelope Valley.

COS will compete in the Modesto Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Men’s Tennis

The college has brought back its men’s tennis program after being dropped for several years.

Martin Herrera, who also coaches the COS women, will do double duty as the men’s coach. Sequoias opens its season Tuesday at Solano College and will host Imperial Valley College Thursday on the COS courts, beginning at 5 p.m.
