Country music legend’s granddaughter breaks down in tears on ‘American Idol’. Here’s why

Emmy Russell made the cut, earned the golden ticket to Hollywood, but not before she shed a few tears on Sunday’s episode of “American Idol.”

The granddaughter of late country music legend Loretta Lynn’s appearance began with a quick segment showing her and her mother, Patsy Russell.

“I know that your memaw would be so proud of you,” Patsy tells Emmy. “You go out there and show them your heart.”

Russell entered the studio in front of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan timidly.

“I’m from Nashville, Tennessee,” she said quietly. “I sang music my entire life.”

Then she mentioned that her grandmother was a country singer. That, of course, prompted the judges to ask who her grandmother was.

“She’s one of the biggest country music singers of all time, but to me she’s just my grandma,” Russell said.

Russell then sang a song she wrote — “Skinny” — which is about eating disorders. You can see it on her Instagram page, here.

“Emmy, you’re an A-plus songwriter,” Perry said. “So was your grandma. You have the gift. I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was, you are totally different.”

“My dear, you have promise,” Richie said. “And I like your promise.”

“We just gotta lift you up and get you more confident and you have to own it,” Bryan added.

That’s when Perry kept asking her who she was, having her repeat her name and where she was from several times. Each time, she got a little more assertive, but she also got a little more emotional before full-blown tears started to fall.

“My name is Emmy, and I’m 24, and I’m from Nashville, Tennessee,” she said crying while also smiling.

The segment ended with Russell showing off her golden ticket. So, we’ll potentially get to see plenty more of Lynn’s granddaughter on the show in the coming weeks.
