EXCLUSIVE: Continuing in the tradition of such Disney+ witchcraft staples as the Hocus Pocus movie franchise and Marvel’s Agatha All Along, Disney Branded Television has given a pilot order to Coven Academy (woking title), a single-camera supernatural dramedy for Disney Channel and Disney+.
In Coven Academy, written by High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator/executive producer Tim Federle, a coven of teenage witches-in-training must protect their town from a looming threat.
Federle and Bronwyn North-Reist executive produce through Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions under his overall deal with Disney Branded Television.
Under the pact, Federle also executive produces the live-action comedy series Vampirina, set to premiere later this year on Disney Channel and Disney+.
Vampirina is one of two upcoming DBT music-driven multi-camera comedy series, along with How We Became The Biggest Band in the World (working title). They will join Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Prior Disney Channel/Disney+ single-camera shows include HSM: The Musical: The Series and Secrets of Sulphur Springs.
Federle also is set to direct the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion movie sequel for Disney’s 20th Century Studios and is writing the stage musical adaptation of The Greatest Showman for the Disney Theatrical Group. He previously won a Humanitas Award for co-writing Fox’s Oscar-nominated animated feature Ferdinand.
