Crash involving speeding car destroys guardrail, temporarily closes I-70

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Two people suffered critical injuries in a car crash after the driver lost control and hit a guardrail on I-70, KCPD reported.

The crash happened just before midnight on Saturday, according to the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.

A black Toyota Corolla was speeding on eastbound I-70 when the driver lost control near Benton Boulevard and went off the highway to the left, hitting and destroying over 50 feet of guardrail. KCPD said the Toyota “ended up on top of the guardrail at an angle.”

Neither the passenger nor the driver were wearing seatbelts and both were taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.

KCPD says weather is not a factor in the crash given that it happened before rain moved into the area, but the driver is under investigation for possibly DUI.

The crash caused all lanes of eastbound I-70 to close for approximately 1.5 hours.
