Dallas Museum of Art acquires Cecily Brown painting ‘The Splendid Table’

The Dallas Museum of Art has added a painting by renowned contemporary artist Cecily Brown to its permanent collection.

The Splendid Table (2019-20), which is featured in the DMA’s exhibition “Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations,” was given to the museum by the Rachofsky Collection and the Hartland and Mackie Family / Labora Collection.

In his review of the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 9, Dallas Morning News contributor Benjamin Lima wrote that “the appetizing deer and geese carcasses of The Splendid Table … reinforce the artist’s emphasis on the animal side of human nature. Brown’s painted world is full of sensual, tangible experience.”

A monumental triptych, The Splendid Table takes inspiration from 17th-century Flemish still-life painting, the DMA has noted. It is the first work by the London-born painter to join the museum’s collection.

Brown lives and works in New York City, which has been her home since the mid-1990s.
