Dallas R&B singer Larry Gee to perform ahead of kidney transplant

If you don’t see veteran Dallas R&B performer Larry Gee onstage this summer, he’s got a perfectly good reason: He’ll be recovering from kidney transplant surgery.

Before going under the knife in June, he’ll perform what he’s calling a “celebration of extending life concert” on May 1 at the Kessler Theater. The singer, born Larry Gayao, made a splash in 2012 when he performed his songs “Camera Phone” and “Yo Mama” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Eleven years later, his undiagnosed high blood pressure led to Stage 5 kidney disease.

“One second you’re chasing your dreams as a musician, the next second you’re in a hospital bed,” he recently told WFAA-TV (Channel 8). In January, a compatible kidney donor was finally found. “I knew eventually it would happen. I just tell people on the list, ‘Don’t give up.’”
