Dancer’s Loft students perform “Nutcracker” scenes for holiday season

OLEAN — Ballet students from The Dancer’s Loft have celebrated the holiday season with several performances featuring selections from Christmas favorite “The Nutcracker.”

Laurie Donner, owner of the Olean-based dance studio, asked her students last year if they’d be interested in performing divertissements from the Tchaikovsky ballet — and they enthusiastically jumped at the chance.

Earlier this month, Dancer’s Loft students took part in the “Evening of Thanks” event at the Palmer Opera House on Dec. 11. The 10 dancers in attendance performed two excerpts from “The Nutcracker” — the Spanish and Candycanes divertissements — and a new piece of choreography to the “Hallelujah” music.

The annual “Dancing in the Park” night was again held at Pioneer Park in Portville on Tuesday. Donner held a ballet class with her students in the gazebo, center work under the lights and finished by performing their “Nutcracker” divertissements and the new “Hallelujah” piece. Donner thanked the Portville parks officials and Syd Evans for the wonderful evening.

Most recently, students were asked to perform Candycanes for “Santa in the Window” at Christie’s Boutique on North Union Street on Wednesday. Donner said it was a lovely evening featuring Nate and Meaghan Bell singing carols, the dancers’ Candycanes performance and an appearance by Santa.
